Cuesta Women's Volleyball hosted rival #25 Ventura College to open Western State Conference-North Division play. The Cougars opened strong and took the first set, 25-20, but the Pirates bounced back and won the second set by the same score, 25-20, before taking control of the match with a win, 25-18, in the third set. In the fourth set, the Cougars fell behind early, 6-9, but evened the match at 10-10, before closing on a 15-8 run to force a fifth set tiebreaker. Ventura opened the final set with Libero Shae Daniels as their first server and she posted 14 consecutive points on the board, before the Cougars got a chance to serve at game and match-point, 14-1. The Pirates scored next and took the set, 15-1, and the match, 3-2. The loss (20-25, 25-20, 25-18, 18-25, 15-1) dropped the Cougars to 8-6 on the season and 0-1 against the WSC North Division.
The Cougars continue their first swing through the WSC-North, when they travel to #7 Santa Barbara next Wednesday (6 PM). The Vaqueros, like Ventura, were one of four members of the WSC-North to reach the CCCAA Regional Semi-finals last season.
