Cuesta Women's Water Polo battled through a tough bracket at the Mt San Antonio Invitational in Walnut last weekend to go 2-2. The Cougars jumped out of the van and into the water against #1 Long Beach. The top-ranked Vikings built a four-goal lead in the and held the Cougars scoreless until the final two minutes of the half. The Cougars rallied after the intermission, but Long Beach matched them and defended their ranking. Cuesta regrouped to finish the first day of the tournament with a win over Miramar, 13-6. Cuesta took a one-goal lead at the intermission and routed the Jets with an 8-2 second half run to claim the victory, 13-6. The Cougars' offense continued its run on the tournament's second day. Cuesta built a comfortable lead over Palomar, 11-6, in the first half and held off a 4th quarter run by the Comets to take the victory, 13-12. In the tournament finale, the Cougars faced the team just ahead of the in the polls, #3 American River. The 3rd-ranked Beavers and Cougars played even in the first quarter, but American River slowly pulled away with a two-goal lead at the intermission. In the second half it was all Beavers as they held their ranking en route to victory, 13-7. The loss dropped the Cougars to 11-6.
The Cougars shall enjoy a bye-week and return to action on October 8 in Bakersfield. The Renegades are enjoying their inaugural campaign and are the newest members of the Western State Conference. Bakersfield is a respectable 2-3 in their first five games, including a forfeit by Santa Monica. After their trip to Bakersfield, the Cougars shall host Cuesta Invitational on October 10-11
