ESPN1280 Athlete of the Week- Gwyndolyn Katics, Track & Field

Cuesta Sprinter Gwyndolyn Katics has built an impressive resume in her first season with the Cougars and should reap more accolades as track heads into its near month-long championship season.  Katics has been the Cougars' top sprinter this season and owns the title as the "fastest woman on campus".  Last week at the UC Santa Barbara Open, she added some emphasis to that sobriquet with a new season-best time of :25.23 in the 200-meters.  She finished 9th in the 22-woman field, which was filled with four-year collegiate and international competitors, but only two other CCCAA runners.  Over the past two weeks, Katics has posted season bests in all three sprint races and met the "A" post-season qualifying standard for both the 200 and 400-meters (:57.05).  She is, currently, just a tenth of second off the "A" standard in the 100-meters.  All time at Cuesta, she is chasing three of the Cougars' oldest records.  She ranks 2nd all-time behind Heather Owens's 400-meter record of :56.43, which was set in 1986.  Last weekend's race also moved her into 3rd all time for the 200-meters, behind former CCCAA State Champions Julia Turing and Riley Cooks. She also trails Turing and two others at the 4th spot in the 100-meters (:12.50).

Cuesta Track & Field travels to Ventura this Friday (11 AM) for the 2025 Western State Conference Preliminarily Meet.  The season shall conclude at the CCCAA State Championships in San Mateo on May 17-18
