Wrestling Qualifies Six for State, Claim 5th Place at Regionals

Cuesta Wrestling claimed 6th place at the 2024 CCCAA Regional Meet and qualified six wrestlers for this weekend's 2024 CCCAA State Championship.  All six wrestlers are making their first trip to the State Meet- Preston Scharf (165), Grant Eklund (157), Chance Evans (197), Marshall Beecham (165), Dominic Marquez (125), and Daimen Rodriguez (133).  The Cougars shall also add alternate Luke Vanbrabant (149),

First-year Grappler Preston Scharf, an all-SouthEast Conference (SEC) 1st team selection, was the only Cougar to reach a Regional Title Match.  He finished in 2nd place at 165, after dropping only his second bout of the season in the title match.  Fellow Freshmen Grant Eklund and Chance Evans qualified at 157 and 197, respectively, after both finished 3rd at the Regional Meet.  Ecklund, who also made all-SEC First Team, was 4-1 at Regionals.  He leads the team with 33 wins this season and is in range of Nestor Ruelas's 2010 Cuesta standard of 36 wins in a season.  Evans went 3-1 last weekend and improved to 26-6 overall.  He has only competed at 197 this season and is the only Cougar to make State this season without leaving his division.   Scharf shall be joined at 165 by his teammate Marshall Beecham, who took a loss to him in last week's quarterfinals, before battling back through the consolation bracket to reach the Bronze Medal bout. Meecham, a member of the all-SEC Second Team, is 22-12 overall.  No other Cuesta wrestler has spent more time on the mat than Dominic Marquez.  Marquez hit the mats 41 times this year, while posting 19-7 mark at 125 and a 9-6 mark at 133.  He qualified 4th at 125 after taking 2nd in the SEC and 4th in the Region. Freshmen Daimen Rodriguez is one of six Cuesta Wrestlers to reach the 20-win mark this season, which he did while splitting his mat time between 133 and 141.  He finished the season at 133, where he went 13-8 overall.  Freshman Luke Vanbrabant is an alternate, after finishing 7th at 149.  He posted all 24 of his wins this season at 149.
