The Cougars' Women's Cagers opened the 2025 Western State Conference schedule last Saturday in Santa Maria with victory over local Allan Hancock, 69-68. The Cougars, who had not led since the contest's opening minutes, 24-23, battled back from 11-points down to tie the game going into the final period. Freshman Forward Fiona Durham led the way with a double-double of 21 points and 12 rebounds. Durham also got some help from teammates Reese Pasternik and Kaylee Batten (pict), who each another added 18 points to the Cougars' total. In addition to her scoring, Pasternik completed her scoresheet by posting game-highs with six assists and eight steals. However, in the final ten seconds of the game, Batten sealed the victory. She converted two free throws to take the lead and blocked the Bulldogs' potential game-winner. Cuesta Women's Basketball is currently 10-6 overall and 1-0 against the WSC.
Cuesta Women's Basketball shall host #4 Moorpark this Wednesday (5 PM) as part of a men's and women's twinbill. Both teams were reached the 2024 CCCAA Playoffs and were ranked in last week's voting- Cuesta was 33rd. The Raiders, who reached the 2024 CCCAA State Championship Game, have won the past five WSC titles, while the Cougars are chasing their first crown since leaving the Coast Conference after back-to-back titles in 1981 and 1982. The Cougars return to the road on Saturday (1/3 PM) for another WSC Men's and Women's Doubleheader in Oxnard.
