Cuesta Men's Water Polo has won 31 conference titles since its founding in 1979, including the past two under Coach Greg Enloe. The five-time defending Western State Conference Champion Cougars open their title defense in Van Nuys against Los Angeles Valley College. The Monarchs, who have won five titles, are the only other team to claim a WSC Crown since 2010. After facing off with LA Valley on Wednesday (3 PM), the poloists will remain in Southern California to play three games at a tournament held at Oceanside High School in Huntington Beach. The Cougars' Thursday lineup includes Mt St Mary's (9:30), McKendree College (1:30) and the Riptide Club (7 PM).
Cuesta's Poloists closed out a disappointing Cuesta I Tournament with a pair of losses on the second day. The Cougars first day schedule was wiped out by a power outage on campus, as two of the four canceled games were set to feature the home team. On Saturday, with the power up and running, the Cougars opened against unranked Orange Coast and lost to the Pirates, 11-8. In the nightcap, Cuesta and American River battled into "Sudden Death" overtime, where the Beavers took the game, 14-13. The Cougars are now 7-6 on the season.
Sophomore All American
Johnny Starr scored seven goals and dished out three assists, while accounting for nearly half of the Cougars' 21 goals on the day. Starr also took a step closer to becoming the 39th member of the Cuesta's 100-Career Goal Century Club. A list, which includes current Cuesta Assistant Coach Karl Blum, who tallied 119 goals in the green and black.
