Cuesta Men's Track & Field jumped out in front at the 2026 Western State Conference Championships, after posting 78.5 points at last weekend's preliminary meet Santa Clarita. The Cougars boast a 30-point lead over current runner-up Moorpark, 78.5 to 48.5, as the men try to win their second title ever. The women's team, which has won five conference titles, is the current defending champion. However, they enter this weekend in 4th place overall and just over half the points, 50-26, of current leader Moorpark.
Freshman Leaper Zayne Ellison staked the flag for the Cougars, after taking the lead in the Long Jump with a winning leap of 22- 6.5". Returning all-WSC Champion Alexander Oldham also enjoyed a strong opening to the post season with 3rd place in the High Jump (6'2.75"). 2025 State Champion Weston Greenelsh and fellow all-WSC Harrier Anthony Frere both advanced to the WSC Finals in two events, 800 and 1,500, while each claimed a Silver and a Bronze on the day. Fellow Harrier Jeffrey Mendonca pushed himself in the 10,000-meter run and his time of :33.57.33 should get him to the State Meet. In the throws, Anthony Owens finished 5th in the Discus (39-2.25), despite missing his season-best by ten inches. He also finished 7th in the Discus with a team season-best mark of 126-5.
On the women's side, Kennedy Mcadoo and Riley Passanisi each posted new Cuesta Top 10 marks to earn a spot at next week's finals. Mcadoo moved into 7th all-time at Cuesta for the 200-meters (:57.16), while Passanisi had to overcome some obstacles to move into 3rd all-time at Cuesta for the 100-hurdles (:16.00). A trio of Cuesta Hurlers are also expected to score at next week's finals. Returning All-State Thrower Kiera Taylor (142-4) joined Freshmen Bella Teresi (114-1) and Navaeh Dyer (100-5) as all three set personal best marks in the Discus. The trio, behind Teresi the event winner, also took three of the Top 5 spots in the Shot Put. Heptathlete Kristy Huynh also put her talent and versatility on display. She finished 2nd in the High Jump (5-1), 3rd in the Long Jump (16-1) and joined three of her teammates by taking 4th in the Shot Put (36-4.25).
This Friday's Western State Conference Championship Finals shall be held at Moorpark College.
