Cuesta College Athletics Department is proud to announce this month's selections for the Cuesta Athlete of the Month. This distinct honor recognizes two Cuesta College Athletes each month during the school year who have performed to the highest standards in their sport. Our male selection for April is Track Athlete William Dawes
Sophomore Track & Field Athlete William Dawes collected three titles as he led the men to a Team-Silver at the 2025 Western State Conference Championships. Dawes competed in three individual events and was the leadoff for the Cougars' title winning 4x 100-relay. He cleared a career-best 47-3.5 in the Triple Jump to win the event and establish himself as a State Title contender. Dawes' winning leap also moved into the second spot all time at Cuesta, right behind 2018 CCCAA State Champion Luke Nickelson on the program's leader board. He also claimed the Long Jump title with a leap of 22-1.5, before settling for a Bronze in the High Jump (6-0.75). Dawes earned his third trip to the top of the podium when he joined teammates Joey Mikles, Gavin Beck and Alexander Oldham for the 4x100 Relay. The quartet cleared the course in a new school record time of :42.23, which clipped 0.11 seconds off the previous standard set, almost 40 years ago, in 1977 by Mark Lamberson, Ken Harris, Edmund Alarcio and Brent Dezember.
Men's Track & Field, led by Dawes, shall advance both individually and as a team to the CCCAA Regional and State events over the first three weeks of May.
