A quickly improving Cuesta Men's Basketball team was riding a season-best two-game winning streak, when they hit a wall against a pair of ranked teams leading the Western State Conference. The Cougars traveled to Santa Maria to open their second swing through the WSC circuit against local rival Allan Hancock this past Wednesday. The Cougars trailed the host Bulldogs by a basket, 31-29, at the intermission, but eventually fell, 71-52. Freshman Guard James Nugent led the team with 13 points in the setback. Tonight, the Cougars hosted #22 Moorpark on campus at Stork Gym for another WSC Men's & Women's Doubleheader. The Raiders jumped out early and took a 20-point lead, 53-31, into halftime. The Cougars made some adjustments and closed the scoring gap, 42-37, in the second half, but took their second loss of the week, 95-68. In the setback, Cuesta received a team-high 13 points from both Griffyn Kapao and Brandon Petersmark. The Cougars are 8-15 on the season and currently 3-5 against the WSC Circuit.
The Cougars are back on the road to face Oxnard next Wednesday (5 PM) and return home to host #16 Ventura on Saturday (1 PM). The Cougars have already defeated the Condors twice this season, including a game in Oxnard during the first round of WSC Play, but the Pirates, ranked #16 in the State, are currently undefeated against the WSC. Both games shall be part of a WSC men's and women's doubleheader.
