Men's Basketball hosts the 53rd Hinson's Tire Pros Winter Classic this Friday and Saturday. This is the sixth year that the Morro Bay business has hosted the tournament, but the tournament began in 1969, the fifth year of athletics and basketball at Cuesta College. The first sponsor was MidState Bank, which also hosted a women's water polo tournament at Cuesta starting in 1999. The tournament is smaller now compared to the days of eight-team brackets, partially due to rules that no longer allow three-day, double-elimination tournaments.
This year's quad-tournament shall feature a North-South match-up. Cuesta and local rival Allan Hancock represent the South, while visiting Sequoias and Gavilan carry the banner for the North Region. The Cougars play the last game both nights, so the 10th-ranked Bulldogs shall open the tournament on Friday (5 PM) against Gavilan. The Cougars, who opened the season with a win over #17 West Hills-Lemoore, open the tournament against #2 Sequoias (7 PM) for their second game against a ranked opponent. Everyone will switch partners and start earlier on the second day. On Saturday, Allan Hancock faces the Giants (3 PM) in battle of ranked teams, while Cuesta squares off against the Rams in the tournament finale (5 PM). The Cougars, Bulldogs and Rams all missed the 2021-22 playoffs, while Sequoias bowed out in the CCCAA State Final Four, after falling to eventual State Champion San Francisco in the semi-finals.
