Cuesta Batsmen Earn Home Playoff Series This Weekend

Cuesta Baseball ended the regular season tied atop the Western State Conference and, as the loop's co-Champion, earned a home playoff berth this weekend.  The Cougars shall host a best-of-three series against the visiting Southwestern.  The Jaguars, from Chula Vista, finished in 3rd place in the Pacific Coast Conference.  The Cougars (25-15) and Jaguars (23-17) are familiar post-season foes and have met in the playoffs five times, with the Cougars holding a 4-1 advantage.  Southwestern claimed their first meeting, 11-5, during the Regional Finals in 1994, but the Cougars battled back through the elimination bracket of the same tournament and knocked out the Jaguars, 12-5, in the semi-final.  They met again almost a decade later, when #2-seed Cuesta opened the playoffs with stumbled through an expected win, 11-9.  The Cougars seeded 16th in 2010, 5-4, and 15th in 2018, 13-4, also took a pair of Wild Card games off the Jags.  The installment of the playoff "Cat Fight" between the Cougars and Jaguars is set to open this Friday (2 PM), with games two and three, if needed, scheduled for 11 AM and 3 PM on Saturday.

This season marks Cuesta's 19 playoff berth during Coach Bob Miller's 21 complete seasons since taking over the program in 2003, while he also picked up his program-leading 11th conference title. Miller's 542 victories at Cuesta College rank third all time for the Cougars across all sports.  He trails only Hall of Fame Water Polo Coach Terry Bowen's (1979-2003) 556 wins and All-Time Leader Rusty Blair (1993-2025), who just hung up his whistle last month, with 578 victories.
